The Hare Krishna Maha Mantra
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Meaning, Benefits and How to Chant
What is the Maha Mantra?
The Hare Krishna Maha Mantra is a 16-word Sanskrit mantra considered the "great mantra" (maha = great) for self-realisation in the present age. It is mentioned in the Kali-Santarana Upanishad, one of the 108 Upanishads of the Atharva Veda.
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare
The Meaning of Each Word
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Hare | The energy of the Lord (Hara = Radha, the Lord's divine energy) |
| Krishna | The all-attractive Supreme Person; the source of all existence |
| Rama | The reservoir of all pleasure; the supreme enjoyer |
Together, the mantra is a prayer to the Lord and His energy: "O Lord, O energy of the Lord, please engage me in Your service."
Why Chant the Hare Krishna Mantra?
Srila Prabhupada explained that the Holy Name of the Lord is not different from the Lord Himself. When we chant, we are in direct contact with God through sound vibration. Unlike other forms of meditation that require years of practice in isolated conditions, mantra chanting can be practised anywhere, by anyone, at any age.
Scientifically Documented Benefits
- Stress reduction — reduces cortisol and activates the parasympathetic nervous system
- Improved focus — mantra repetition increases theta and alpha brainwaves (associated with deep meditation)
- Emotional wellbeing — group kirtan increases oxytocin (the "bonding hormone")
- Better sleep — regular mantra meditation reduces anxiety and improves sleep quality
- Community and belonging — kirtan creates a shared spiritual experience
How to Chant — Step by Step
Japa — Personal Meditation
- Sit comfortably in a quiet place (facing east is traditional)
- Hold japa beads in your right hand, starting from the bead next to the "head bead"
- Chant the full mantra (16 words) on each bead, moving one bead per repetition
- One full round = 108 beads = 1,728 Holy Names
- Srila Prabhupada recommended 16 rounds per day (about 2 hours)
- Beginners can start with just 1 round and gradually increase
Kirtan — Group Chanting
Kirtan is chanting in a group, usually with musical instruments. A lead singer sings a phrase and the group repeats it. This call-and-response format is deeply meditative and joyful. Join us every Saturday in Berlin — instruments provided.
Is the Hare Krishna Mantra Sectarian?
No. The mantra uses the names of God that appear across many traditions — Krishna is mentioned in the Bhagavad-Gita, Rama in the Ramayana, and Hare refers to the divine energy. People of all faiths, including Christians, Muslims and Buddhists, have found benefit in mantra meditation. Srila Prabhupada always stressed that Krishna-consciousness is not a Hindu religion but a science of the soul, applicable to all human beings.
