Join us for Janmashtami Berlin 2026 — one of the most joyful and sacred celebrations in the Vaishnava calendar. On 4 September 2026, we will gather at Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple, Hasenheide 106, Berlin, to celebrate the divine appearance of Lord Sri Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

"One who knows the transcendental nature of My appearance and activities does not, upon leaving the body, take his birth again in this material world, but attains My eternal abode, O Arjuna."

— Lord Krishna, Bhagavad-gītā 4.9
Purport by Śrīla Prabhupāda

What is Janmashtami?

Janmashtami — from the Sanskrit janma (appearance) and ashtami (8th day) — is the annual celebration of the appearance of Lord Sri Krishna in this world. According to the Vedic scriptures, Lord Krishna appeared approximately 5,000 years ago, on the 8th day of the waning moon in the month of Bhadrapada, in the city of Mathura, India — in the prison cell of the tyrant King Kamsa, to His devotee-parents Devaki and Vasudeva.

Śrīla Prabhupāda explained that Krishna's appearance is unlike any ordinary birth: "Kṛṣṇa's appearance in this world is not like ordinary birth. He appears by His own internal potency." (BG 4.6 purport). This is why Janmashtami is not merely a birthday celebration — it is a sacred occasion to connect with the Supreme Lord through chanting, prayer, fasting and devotion.

Śrīla Prabhupāda on Janmashtami

Śrīla Prabhupāda, the founder of the Hare Krishna movement and the person who brought Krishna consciousness to the Western world, placed great importance on the observance of Janmashtami. He wrote and spoke extensively about the transcendental significance of Lord Krishna's appearance:

"Kṛṣṇa's birth is not an ordinary birth. He is not forced to take birth due to karma. He takes birth whenever He likes, as confirmed in Bhagavad-gītā: sambhavāmy ātma-māyayā. His birth is by His own internal energy."

— Śrīla Prabhupāda, Kṛṣṇa Book Chapter 3

"On Janmāṣṭamī, the devotees observe a fast throughout the day and spend the night chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, hearing the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa's birth, and worshipping the Deity."

— Śrīla Prabhupāda
