What is Mantra Meditation?

Mantra meditation is one of the most ancient and accessible forms of meditation in the world. Unlike silent meditation — which can be difficult for beginners — mantra meditation gives the mind a sacred sound to focus on. The repetition of the mantra gradually stills the mind, reduces stress and opens the heart.

Modern neuroscience confirms what Vedic sages knew thousands of years ago: chanting mantras activates the vagus nerve, reduces cortisol (the stress hormone), and induces theta brainwaves — the same state as deep meditation.

The Hare Krishna Maha Mantra

The mantra we chant at Hare Krishna Berlin is the Maha Mantra — the "great mantra" for this age:

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna
Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare

16 words · Sanskrit · Open to everyone

These 16 Sanskrit words are a direct address to God and His divine energy. Srila Prabhupada — who brought this mantra to the Western world in 1966 — described it as a direct line of communication with the Supreme: "When you chant Hare Krishna, you are associating directly with God through sound vibration."

Two Ways to Practise

🎵 Kirtan — Group Chanting

Kirtan is the communal form — a lead singer chants and everyone repeats, accompanied by mridanga drums, kartals (hand cymbals) and harmonium. It is deeply joyful and meditative at the same time. Studies show that group chanting synchronises heartbeats and creates a powerful collective meditative state within minutes.

At Hare Krishna Berlin we hold kirtan every Saturday from 4 PM. Absolute beginners are especially welcome — you just repeat what you hear.

📿 Japa — Personal Chanting

Japa is the individual practice — quietly repeating the Hare Krishna mantra on a string of 108 prayer beads (japa mala). One full round takes about 10 minutes and covers 1,728 repetitions of the Holy Name. Srila Prabhupada recommended 16 rounds daily, but beginners start with just 1 round.

Is it Religious? Do I Need to Believe in Krishna?

No. Mantra meditation through kirtan is a practice, not a belief system. Many people who attend are Christians, Muslims, atheists or simply curious. Srila Prabhupada always said: "You don't need to change your religion. Just chant and see what happens."

The only requirement is an open mind and a willing heart.
